How this is worked out

The pressures come from a formula we fitted to tyre pressure charts published by wheel makers, mainly ENVE's tubeless charts for road, gravel and mountain bikes. Checked against every value on those charts, it lands within about 4% on average, and it agrees within 2 psi with Zipp's and ENVE's own calculators.

The charts are for tubeless tyres in the dry and give one pressure per bike. The adjustments follow what tyre and wheel makers publish: the rear a few percent harder than the front, as in Zipp's and SILCA's calculators (the same front and rear on TT bikes, which carry their weight evenly); 10% more air for inner tubes, between Hunt's and Continental's advice; 10% less in the wet, as Continental advises; and 8% less on rough roads, as Zipp does on chip seal. Treat the result as a starting point, test it on your own roads, and never go above the maximum printed on your tyre or rim.
